Mazal Tov! This is an exciting time for any bride-to-be!

A time is filled with shopping, booking, organising and getting ready for a whole new life to be shared with a special person.

As the bride to be get ready with all the practical things for the wedding, she also need to get ready spiritually.

From up to 3 days before the wedding, the bride to be uses the Mikvah for the first time. On this occasion, she can go during the day. At Southgate Mikvah , we decorate the room specially for the occasion and give the bride to be two complementary return visits to our Mikvah after her wedding.

We also present the bride with a small gift to mark the occasion.

The suggested donation is between £18 and £36 (18 signifies life and 36 multiple of two, the joining of two lives together).

What difference does it make?

For the bride , the Mikvah holy waters change her status as part of her transition into married life, into a new spiritual state.

Jewish tradition has always taught that the source of the sanctity comes from the Mikvah.

When does the counting start?

At the end of the monthly period, one counts 7 clean days and then the bride to be is ready to immerse in the Mikvah(this is different to subwquent occasion when a married woman counts five days from the start of her period and then seven clean days). It is recommended that the bride to be takes classes from a competent teacher who can explain in details the laws of family purity.We at Southgate Mikvah can arrange these classes for you.

When at the Mikvah how do I get ready and what do I need to bring?

You either can prepare at home or in the Mikvah, by having a bath, cutting nails and combing hairs, etc,

At the Mikvah you will find a check list and the Mikvah attendant will be able to assist you with any queries.

We provide all your need for your preparation from towels to cotton buds. so you don’t need to bring anything.

Who can come with me?

Any female close relative like your mother or/and mother in law. You can bring light kosher refreshments and a lechaim, but please do check with us.

Once ready the Mikvah attendant will run through a check list and explain the immersion process. You can take time in the water as it is a particularly auspicious time for prayer and you can request your hearts desires to G-d while in the Mikvah.

Going to the Mikvah is in the most private way maintaining the links to our foremothers from generations past and to ensuring the continuation of the Jewish family. At Southgate Mikvah we aim to offer the Mikvah experience in a calm way giving you all the time you need to prepare and in the pool area to complete your immersion.

Mikvah isn’t something women are commanded to do. We do it not to make ourselves feel better, but to serve G-d, and in turn, we bring holiness to an act that under the right circumstances, is the deepest expression of our love for one another and for G-d. Mikvah for many is an elevating transforming experience.
